Nursing Professionals And Aspiring Medical Professionals

Conversing with medical professionals and aspiring medical professionals, I am constantly reminded of the reasons why I would like to become a physician. These conversations remind me of the many selfless acts that are made on a daily basis to improve the quality of life for another human-being. I remember the sense of wonder I felt when, as a child, I accompanied my mother at her job as a nurse before attending elementary school in the mornings. While medicine has always been an interest of mine, it is now with deep determination, as well as gratification, that I have come to realize my ambition—to become a physician. Living in Crescent City, FL, a city with a population of ~1500, for the majority of my life has taught me many valuable communication skills that I feel give me an advantage as a practicing physician to be able to provide better health-care for a patient. At Lakewood Nursing Center in Crescent City, where I accompanied my mother before school, I first grasped th e special needs of geriatrics. My initial interest in working with diabetic patients was due to my own family history with the disease. After witnessing my aunt go into a diabetic coma in her sleep, I view diabetes as an evil that needs to be eradicated. The patients at Lakewood served as the spark that ignited the fire within me to help move the field of medicine forward; I was moved by the determination of these patients as they dealt with an array of conditions.
